Verochka, it has potato leaf (PL) type foliage, right?

I grew Grusha Chernaya (Black Pear) from RO (Russkiy Ogorod) once. Mine actually turned out to be an early variety.

I also bought “Black Pear” from NK Russkiy Ogorod, but for some reason, after reading good reviews, I chose to plant “Black Moor” instead. Now I’m thinking I probably should plant both of them.

You need to start its seeds at the same time as late-season varieties, and I don’t recommend planting it without a greenhouse here in Siberia. It doesn’t have time to fully form the fruits, and because of that, if you ripen it off the vine on a windowsill, it tastes bad—only good for processing/sauce.

Lenochka, I didn’t notice that issue. Mine grew in open ground and ripened off the vine perfectly in a box. 😳

Girls, I grew Black Pear from NK RO for 2 years. The first summer was very rainy – the flavor of the little pear turned out a bit bland. But last summer, in the sun and heat, it was very sweet. Both years the bushes were productive and the fruits had no green shoulders. And it’s one of the last ones to catch any diseases. Fully ripe, it stores for about 2 weeks, but it wrinkles a little. I plant it out in late May under hoops in open ground. By late August, the first and second trusses ripen completely on the vine.

Maybe it just seemed that way to me in comparison to Black Moor 😳😳😳😳, or I don’t even know… my seeds were from Aelita.

Last year I bought Black Pear last, and accordingly planted it last—on March 20th. From Russkiy Ogorod… advertised as early-ripening… the first tomato ripened on August 8th…, the taste didn’t impress me for some reason… I only liked the color and shape…

I’ve been growing the Bedouin variety with potato leaf (PL) for several years. Under the conditions of my dacha near Dnepropetrovsk in southeastern Ukraine, the flavor of the tomatoes reminds me of Black Prince, but it’s more productive, unfussy, and gets late blight much less. It’s tasty, for those who haven’t tried Black Prince. Sweet with a hint of tartness and a hint of saltiness. It’s one of the dark varieties that retains a green spot at the stem. Shape – pear-shaped. The first fruits are large, then they get smaller. A slicing tomato. There is no tough white core inside. Not early-maturing. Tall vine. Doesn’t bake in the southern sun; instead, it gets sweet and aromatic. I don’t think it’s suitable for open ground in the North. It loves sun and heat. When ripening the last fruits indoors in autumn, the taste is much worse, a bit sour. I had to juice them. The juice tastes very good. The color is dark. A bit unusual. Also great for pickling. I recommend it.

A lot of things aren’t “suitable” for open ground in the North, but if you really want to, you can make it work. And by the way, it still pleased me with its yield, beauty, and taste! 👍

Bedouin – I planted several plants. Half of them had potato leaf (PL) foliage. In the greenhouse, it grew to about 3 m (10 ft). Very productive, fruit set is excellent. Tasty, started ripening in early August and kept ripening and setting fruit right up until November.

I bought Black Pear from Gavrish. Advertised as tall, mid-season. The seedling has a regular leaf (RL). I want to plant one in the greenhouse and another out in the garden.

Irina, last year I sowed Black Pear from Gavrish directly into the garden. At the time, I had no idea that tomatoes could have potato leaf foliage. So, I happily weeded ALL of them out. 😂 This year I grew them from seedlings indoors first, and the leaves were indeed potato leaf (PL).

Larisa, we’ll see what grows for me then, I’m not going to throw them away.

Maybe it will still turn out to be a pear 🙂

It will definitely turn out to be a TOMATO, and we don’t just throw tomatoes away. You absolutely have to grow it out and see! 👍

Potato leaf bush, productive, healthy (not disease prone). I really liked the variety, tasty dark pears.

This year I tried 12 dark varieties, Black Pear is one of the tastiest. Last year the first ones were large, and the subsequent ones got smaller. This year it’s the opposite, the first ones were small, and the later ones got 3 times larger. The biggest one was 150 grams (5.3 oz), but it came from a megabloom (double blossom).

Interesting, I saw seeds in a shop from Aelita called “Grushka Chernaya” (Little Black Pear) – is that the same thing?

No, it’s not the same. I grew Grushka (Little Pear) 3 years ago, it’s smaller, more acidic, and not as buttery.

I had a real whopper grow this year 🙂 Even now I still have a few left from the ones ripening off the vine.

That’s how big mine were last year, but this year they went vegetative (grew all foliage), and as a result, I only got small ones. 😳

I also really liked the variety 👍. Potato leaf. Sweet, productive, and disease resistant. It can store for about a month without much loss in flavor. Seeds were from NK RO..

Same here, last year mine kept for over a month when picked ripe, and it stayed tasty 👍👍👍

I liked the variety, grew in open ground. The fruits initially have green at the stem, but after ripening (or ripening off the vine) they color up completely. It turned out mid-season, handled the heat and wind very well.

My Black Pear is from Natashenka (Borisovna). A very productive bush, the fruits are a nice size, all over 100g (3.5 oz) and very sweet tomatoes 😋 It is now my favorite 😘

I was gifted a Black Pear seedling at a local meetup by Polina-Borchanotcka. A huge thank you to her for that. And along with it, a Black Truffle (Yaponskiy Chernyi Trufel) for comparison.
They were planted next to each other in the greenhouse. They are extremely similar in height, leaf type, and fruit shape. Basically, twin brothers. 😂
I really liked the tomato, productive, tasty. Moderately meaty and juicy at the same time. During our current heatwave, there was almost no blossom drop. It set fruit all the way to the top. In the foreground is Black Pear. Right behind it is Black Truffle. The ones on the scale aren’t the biggest specimens, there were larger ones.

Last year I bought these seeds. The tomatoes that grew only reminded me of the picture by shape, we never managed to see those beautiful tomatoes from the packet 🙂

I plant Black Pear every year for Verunya, she really likes the sweetish taste and soft, you could say jammy/marmalade-like flesh. Out of curiosity, in 2018 I planted it next to a bush of Wine Jug (Vinnyi Kuvshin) from Yaroslavna. They are different, very similar in shape, both have excellent yield, BUT Wine Jug has a purple tint, while Black Pear has a brown one, and the pear is sweeter. This year I planted it next to a bush of Marmalade Lightbulb (Marmeladnaya Lampochka), absolutely identical. But I wrote right away in this thread that my original seeds were from Aelita, the little pear grows from 100 to 300 grams (the longer I save and grow it, the larger it gets) and the taste is inherently sweet, the flesh is soft and buttery. The larger the fruit, the fewer seeds it has.

Black Moor (Chernyi Mavr) is a cocktail variety, plum-shaped, it doesn’t even come close to these tomatoes.

Sveta, mine is indeterminate, but not very tall, 1.5-1.8m (5-6 ft), potato leaf (PL).

Sveta, I just wrote to you about the potato leaf on Black Pear, and now I’m doubting myself. I think both bushes might have had regular leaves (RL), both BP and ML. Ah shoot, my memory is like a sieve 😳

Sveta, I’ll plant both varieties again next year, and in March we’ll figure out what kind of leaves they have. Honestly, I can’t recall, but Verunya confirmed the taste and texture of the tomatoes were identical. It’s a pity I don’t have photos this year, I just didn’t have time for them 😳
