Quick Summary of Severnoe Siyanie (Northern Lights)

  • 🌍 Origin: This is the Russian-grown lineage of the famous American heirloom “Northern Lights” (translated directly into Russian as Severnoe Siyanie). It has been widely circulated and adapted by Russian seed savers.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall). In a greenhouse, it easily reaches up to 2 meters (6.5 ft). Growers report success when training the plant to 2 or 3 stems.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Beautiful oblate (flat-round) bicolor beefsteaks (yellow/orange with red/pink marbling). They are large, averaging 200-300g (7-10.5 oz), with some fruits reaching up to 500g (1.1 lbs).
  • 👅 Flavor & Texture: Highly praised for its outstanding sweet, fruity flavor profile that is classic to the best bicolor varieties. The flesh is very juicy and meaty, making it perfect for fresh salads.
  • Maturity & Yield: Mid-season. A standout feature is its earliness compared to other bicolors; growers note it is often the very first bicolor variety to ripen in the greenhouse (by late July). Productive and reliable.

A very tasty little bicolor. And this year, grown from my own saved seeds, it is productive. Grew in the greenhouse in 3 stems. I like it very much, I will plant it again.
