Quick Summary of Blue Tom
- 🌿 Plant Habit: INDETERMINATE (Tall/Vining). It reaches about 1.8 m (6 ft) in height. Features regular leaf foliage. Growers report excellent results when pruned to two main stems.
- 🌍 Origin: A stunning dark anthocyanin variety that has gained immense popularity among European and Russian tomato collectors for its beauty and flavor.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Evenly oblate (flattened-round) beefsteaks weighing 250-300g (8.8-10.5 oz). The base color is a rich, dark burgundy red, topped with striking purple/black anthocyanin shoulders. The flesh is dense, meaty, yet very juicy.
- 👅 Flavor: Highly rated! Very tasty, sweet tomatoes with a delicate and pleasant fruity aroma.
- ⏳ Maturity & Yield: Mid-season. Yields range from average to highly productive depending on growing conditions. Pro Tip: The dark anthocyanin expression is highly dependent on sunlight and cool temperatures; fruits ripening in the cooler autumn weather will display much darker “blue/black” shoulders than those ripening in mid-summer heat.

I grew Blue Tom in 2024. The variety is tasty and beautiful. I really liked it. The yield in my growing conditions was average. The very first fruits had barely noticeable anthocyanin, but after the temperatures dropped closer to autumn, a really good ‘antho’ appeared on the shoulders.
Seeds were from @Ilkina. Natasha, thank you!
