📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Garetski Rozovyi (Greek Pink)
- 🌍 Origin: A fantastic commercial/heirloom variety from Bulgaria. The name translates directly from Bulgarian as “Greek Pink” (sometimes spelled Gretski Rozovyi).
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Determinate (bush). Despite being a determinate, it is quite vigorous and tall for a bush-type, reaching about 4 ft (1.2 m) in open ground. Uniquely, it continues to fruit throughout the entire season rather than giving one single flush.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Perfectly round, very firm pink globes. They are exceptionally uniform, generally weighing up to 7 oz (200 g).
- 👅 Flavor & Use: Meaty with a classic, good tomato flavor. Because they are so firm, perfectly round, and have a long shelf life, they are an excellent choice for whole-canning and pickling.
Gretski Rozovyi (Bulgaria) – I got this variety from Ira (Sha-iri). It’s a determinate variety from Bulgaria. Beautiful, firm, pink globes up to 7 oz (200 g).
Meaty, with a good tomato flavor, and they are great keepers on the counter. I think you could easily use them for canning.
It grew outdoors in open ground, under a row cover, reached about 4 ft (1.2 m) tall, and fruited all season long. (The fruitworms really loved this one, they kept trying to devour it). The bush:
Svetlana mentions that the Tomato Fruitworm or Armyworm caterpillar kept trying to eat her harvest.
These highly destructive moth caterpillars love to bore perfectly round, deep holes straight into ripening tomatoes, completely ruining the fruit. Because this variety produces such sweet, classic pink tomatoes, it is an absolute magnet for pests. If you are growing outdoors, the best way to protect your harvest is to proactively spray the plants with Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis)—a safe, organic biological spray that specifically targets and eliminates caterpillars without harming bees or other beneficial insects!
