Since last year, I’ve had a packet of Japanese Crab from Sibsad (Siberian Garden).
Description: a new original tomato variety with large fruits weighing up to 800 g (1.7 lbs). The plant is vigorous, impressive with dark green foliage, height 1-1.5 m (3.3-5 ft)…. forms up to 5 clusters with round, flat-round fruits of red-raspberry color; fruits on the first cluster are quite ribbed…

My Crab is from Sib.Sad. One of the tastiest tomatoes this year. Grew outdoors in open ground. Very productive, pruned to two stems, all fruits were large (none under 400 grams / 14 oz), fragrant, sweet, bright raspberry color.

My Krab is from Poisk, batch 1356. The description also mentions strong ribbing, plus they write that the unripe fruit has a dark green spot near the stem and the ripe color is scarlet-red… Well, I didn’t find any of that in mine, and my ripe color is raspberry-pink. Maybe mine is an off-type? But I really liked it — I will keep planting it and to heck with the exact name.
Maybe this darker green tone turning into streaks is what they called a “spot”… and in the Sibsad description it says ribbing is on the first cluster (I don’t remember the first cluster, but slight ribbing is present = visible in the photo), and the color is raspberry — which is closer to my color. So maybe it is the true variety after all?
Seeds from Poisk, where they promised strong ribbing. The most ribbed one turned out to be the one in the photo; the rest of the tomatoes had less pronounced ribbing. And the color is not scarlet-red like in the description, but rather red-pink. Tasty, beautiful, but the yield was average for me.

tomatinka: Found a description of Japanese Crab from 1996… shape resembling a crab claw. Very meaty. Fruit weight 300-400 gm. How about that! And what shape should it have to look like a claw?

I grew 4 bushes. 3 of them were an off-type — they grew into determinate bushes, about 0.5 meters (1.6 ft) tall. Loaded with small plum tomatoes. Average taste. That’s what grew for me.
I gave one bush away, and according to the new owner, a real Japanese Crab is growing on it. I haven’t seen it myself.
Did anyone else grow from this same batch this year? What grew?
Not a bad variety — productive, all fruits are large, the flesh is juicy and buttery. Unfortunately, it didn’t build up enough sugar, but I will repeat it to make a final decision.
I also grew the Aelita one. I liked it, but it was a bit late for me. Started ripening in August and didn’t have time to fully ripen on the vine. But the potential is 🙌. I will sow the seedlings earlier, in February. The fruit color is raspberry. The flesh is meaty. The taste is balanced. Most importantly, it didn’t catch any diseases at all 👍👍👍

Who knows what actually grew? Because these same seeds have been sitting in my stash for 2 years… And another packet from Poisk. But the girls from the forum sent me so many seeds that planting these crabs got pushed back a few years )))
I planted seeds from Poisk this year. I went online to look up the seed packet, and it turned out there are a ton of variations of the exact same packet with completely different data. Somewhere it says the tomato is red, and somewhere else it says raspberry. Mostly it says 600g (1.3 lbs) on the packet, but on mine, it says 350g (12 oz). And all packets are from the Poisk company with the exact same photo. So I took a picture of my packet and the back of it.
So, my variety turned out to be up to 1.8m (6 ft) tall, very productive. The fruits were mostly round or globe-shaped like balls with weak ribbing. There were also a few nearly heart-shaped ones. And flat-round ones with plump wavy sides occasionally appeared too. But mostly round balls. The variety is early; it was one of the very first to ripen. In my top three were Yaponka, Yaponskiy Krab, and Verkini. My whole group of oxhearts from Siberian Garden (like Alsu, Rozovyi Med, Batyanya, etc.) ripened later, even though they were listed as early-ripening.
The taste of the fruits is very good. Meant for fresh salads. It set fruit all the way to the top, and all were large. It ripened in waves, we ate them through September inclusively. A good variety, I will keep it in the form I got it. I didn’t quite figure out the color. It still seems red to me, not raspberry, as written on the packet.
