Alla, did your Orange Truffle have “green shoulders”? Because it’s great in every way, but broad-shouldered. Actually, I lied — it unexpectedly stored poorly for me. I set it aside for eating later, and it let me down.
And is your Red Truffle prone to BER?
amarant: Black Truffle and Black Pear turned out to be twin brothers. Grew side by side, I could compare. Height, appearance, and taste, everything is identical. Both productive, tasty, store well.
Thanks for the comparison! Could you tell me, what was the average fruit weight? Do the clusters need to be tied up, or do they not kink from the weight?

There was absolutely no sign of BER on any of the truffles. Stores excellently.
I didn’t tie the clusters, they attach well to the stem.
The weight of truffles is from 70 to 250 g (2.5-8.8 oz) for individual fruits. Mostly 120-150 g (4-5.3 oz).

This year I planted Black Truffle, Black Pepper-Shaped, and Cuban Black side by side. Cuban and Pepper-Shaped are very similar, but Truffle threw out this thing on the bottom cluster…
And then it started growing exactly identical to the other two. 😛
And I was so hoping for little pears. 😞

Alla, I watered with MKP (Monopotassium phosphate) 3! times and sprayed directly with calcium nitrate from a spray bottle.
Besides it and the ‘Japanese Crab’, nobody else had green shoulders 😞.
Japanese Truffle GOLDEN from Biotechnika.

This year I planted Pink Truffle from Biotechnika, it turned out quite late, but very tasty. The green shoulders disappeared upon full ripening on the bush.
Well, I remembered that I promised to post a photo of a fully ripe orange one. No green shoulders. I think the photo is from late October. I ate the last vine-ripened one last week, so it stores well. The taste remained very worthy for this time of year. Basically, all colors except Pink are staying on my permanent planting list.
This past season I planted Black and Raspberry Truffle. Both turned out productive, but the Raspberry one seemed tastier to me.
Last year I planted Japanese Golden Truffle, was very pleased. Quite productive in my conditions, the fruits can store for a while, a bit dry around the bottom, but the fruits themselves aren’t dry, meaty. I liked them. This year I decided to plant a trendy substitute with the beautiful name ‘Peruvian Bag’ (because “what even is a truffle, pfft”). Planted two bushes of each in different greenhouses, one per greenhouse. The weather conditions for the last two years were similar — a lack of a normal summer. Both varieties are very similar in appearance and fruit, but the Truffle was significantly more productive, ripened earlier, and suffered less from the cold and lack of heat. I will repeat Truffle next year.

Of the truffles, I only planted the Red one. In the greenhouse, it grew on the side in 2 stems and set 5 clusters on one stem, and 3 clusters on the second, with 6-7 tomatoes in each. I recorded 52 fully developed fruits. The taste is also a 4 out of 5. No BER. Didn’t repeat it, had many other varieties. This year I will plant Golden Truffle. 🙂

Elena, so there were 8 clusters on one bush? Did I understand correctly? Did they ripen on the bush or did they have to ripen indoors in our climate? I’ll be planting it from two different collectors!

Yes Anya, 8 clusters on 2 stems. Planted it the year before last. The photo of the red ones is from August 2nd, which means many turned red on the bush by September 10th. 🌺

I only grew the Golden one. This truffle is not early to ripen here and stores very well, so it didn’t go into jars for me. It was kept for fresh eating for later consumption. It lay in a box in the pantry for a long time and then went into salads raw.

I grew Pink Truffle from Biotechnika. It turned out small and low-yielding. However, I liked the taste, ate them right off the bush while working in the greenhouse. Didn’t repeat it this year.

Seeds from Sibsad, yield of three per cluster, ripened without green shoulders, the taste is a bit bland, but beautiful, will repeat.
The Pink one grew outdoors — very productive, but I didn’t like the taste — not sweet, the flesh is grainy (like a watermelon), a bit dry. Haven’t tried it in pickles/jars yet, but I’ll drop it in favor of other varieties..
Thanks for the thread. Read your reviews on them. As much as I am obsessed with all sorts of pears and bags — conclusion — I won’t be planting them.
“Japanese Truffle Red” – lay in storage until New Year, preserved a very decent taste. Saved seeds on December 22. I will continue to plant this variety. The story with the truffle convinced me once again that I need to step on my own rakes (learn from my own experience).
Of the Japanese ones, I only grew the Pink, the taste and yield suit me. But during this past hot summer, most tomatoes didn’t just have green shoulders, they had giant shoulders! Potassium apparently wasn’t being absorbed, even though I fed them generously(( I was surprised that many people grow such small bushes, mine was impossible to measure the height of — a giant, even growing in multiple stems.
