Growers’ Notes and Photos (USDA Zones 3-6)
Orange Heart (Fox Nose)
Verochka (Tomatinka) shared these seeds with me. Grew it in 2012. Easily the most indeterminate indet ever!!! It was the very first vine to hit the greenhouse roof, so I had to lower it. Honestly, doing that was a huge pain because the vine is so thick and robust (unlike a lot of wispy oxheart varieties), the main stem felt hard as a tree trunk. So after wrestling with it for a bit, I just bent it sideways instead of lowering it, too scared I’d snap the stem.
Just like the name implies, the fruits are bright yellow hearts (Vera mentioned hers were more orange). Inside the greenhouse they weren’t huge, maybe 8.8-10.5 oz (250-300 g), but I had one plant outside in the dirt that threw a heart well over 1.1 lbs (500 g). The yield wasn’t massive for me, but the tomatoes are so gorgeous you don’t even care about the yield numbers! Almost felt bad eating them 😆 Taste is decent, just a little lacking in juice.

Vera, yours looks totally orange to me ???
We all have different weather, 2011 and 2012 were pretty bad years for tomatoes here, especially outdoors.

Sveta, this is what mine looked like in 2011.
This one looks kinda pinkish 😊 ???
Olya, Vera, what’s the DTM on this one? Is it a late season?
Nope, more of a mid-season.
Orange Heart / from Olya (Belarus), huge thanks for such an awesome variety!
Indet, very tall vine, pretty sturdy, highly productive. The fruits are heart-shaped, orange, firm, meaty, and I absolutely loved the flavor. The photo shows the lower fruits, but the ones on the upper trusses were super pointed, with a real beak/nipple on them, totally looked like a Fox Nose.
Our Verochka shared these Orange Heart (Fox Nose) seeds with me 👍👍👍
Grew it in the greenhouse, wouldn’t say it got super tall, maybe up to 5.2 ft (1.6 m) max… Heavy, bushy vine with a huge potential for setting fruit… Pumped out tons of gorgeous heart-shaped fruits with that signature pointed tip. The tomatoes are firm, solid, and deep orange 😋 Perfectly balanced sweetness and juice 👍
Verochka, thank you!!! 🌺🌺🌺

I’m assuming “Fox Nose” is just a nickname 🤫
The official national registry lists it as Orange Heart.

Yep, exactly… Verunya just gave it that cute nickname 😊 That’s the fun name it had when I got the seeds 👍
Quote from Alisa:
Is “Fox Nose” available in the US (just curious), what does it translate to in English (would love to track it down)?
Irina, I saw it being sold on eBay from Croatia, shipping worldwide apparently, listed as Fox Nose.

Verochka, it’s literally your Fox Nose.
I get that, I just don’t get how it made its way to Croatia and onto eBay under that name…

I bet there’s a Russian lady living there growing tomatoes and peppers…
And selling the seeds. The listing is actually written like this: Liskin Nos – Fox Nose.

That name has been floating around eBay for two years now, actually I think I saw it listed from Germany originally.
Oksana, Larisa, your pointy-tipped version can absolutely go by Fox Nose. Not all tomatoes from the commercial Poisk brand Orange Heart packets had that sharp point.

Still confused on what the actual correct name is ???
I got it as Fox Nose…
Oksana, the “correct” name is Orange Heart. Vera (tomatinka) just jokingly called it Fox Nose.

Zulfiya, I actually have Orange Heart from Poisk… but I’ve totally lost the desire to plant commercial seeds, thinking about tossing all store-bought packs from my stash 😆

Svetlana, guess I posted the pics in the right thread then 😆 too lazy to re-label them now, already wrote out tags for over half a thousand varieties this season 😫 I’ll fix it next time 😳

Zulya, mine vary in width I guess, some are chubby and some are almost icicle-shaped, but they all have that sharp point.
Grew Orange Heart from Demetra Siberia and from Verochka (Tomatinka), totally different shapes. Demetra’s were heart-shaped with no pronounced point, huge first truss, around 1.3-1.7 lbs (600-800 g). Orange Heart from Tomatinka had a sharp point and weighed around 7 oz (200 g).
Olya, my original seeds were Orange Heart from Poisk, breeder’s edition. Been growing them since 2009.

Vera, your Fox Nose was easily my husband’s favorite this year flavor-wise 🌺
I am in love with this tomato 😘 It’s my favorite color and favorite size 👍 Beautiful and delicious. Mine is more yellow-orange than red-orange. Tall vine, meaty, sweet, yield wasn’t super high though. But they aren’t all grown up yet. Found a pic 😊

Got this variety from Larisa labeled as Fox Nose. Super productive, orange fruits with a pointed tip (all fruits were elongated). Average weight 8.8-12 oz (250-350 g). Amazing taste. Produced until I literally ripped the vines out of the greenhouse. Excellent shelf life. One of my favorites.
Yulya, thanks for the seeds! 😘 Agree with everything you said. Awesome tomato, my 2017 favorite among the orange ones. Huge stunners, pushing over a pound (500 g) each. Absolutely delicious! 👍
Seeds from Redko. Super tasty and meaty. Even in this incredibly rainy summer, the yield was above average. Definitely growing it again.
Tanyusha Senchukova shared Fox Nose with me, huge thanks to her. Planted them outdoors and they really bummed me out at first. Everything else was setting fruit or already ripening, and these were just doing nothing. Picked the very first fruits on Aug 19. By September they finally kicked into gear and set a ton of fruit, just ran out of time to ripen. Note to self: very late season… definitely growing it again though, such a gorgeous and unique shape!
BTW, grew Orange Heart from Aelita back in 2014 and got nothing like this. (Still have seeds, will retest more carefully this year). Honestly we should move Fox Nose to the “F” (L) section of the catalog, kinda hard to find it under Orange Heart 😁
Like we are talking about different varieties… My Fox Nose was a mid-season with a long harvest window, varying degrees of pointiness on the large yellow-orange fruits, and an incredible ability to counter-ripen and store without losing flavor. First ripe one picked July 12, ate the last ones in late October after hauling them all the way to Moscow.
Grew in the greenhouse, south side, pruned to 3 stems, set fruit very well. Sweet, meaty slicer with very few seeds.

Growing it for the third year in a row (and will definitely keep growing it!) 👍. Nothing but pros–fantastic taste 😋, beautiful fruits, heavy yield in the greenhouse grown to two stems, long harvest window, and the late season ones store really well. Huge, vigorous vine, I actually tie the top (which still holds large hearts) straight to the greenhouse frame under the roof.
The fruits are just one solid piece of sweet meat with barely any seeds. I stopped putting it in salads, it’s just too sweet 😁 I eat them straight up like fruit.
Pics from different years:
Read that it was a pretty late variety so I started the seeds early, and the little jerk is already setting buds, even though it has to stay indoors for another month and a half… totally miscalculated, turns out it’s not that late after all, in my conditions it acts more like a mid-season.
Hey pros, can you tell me if this variety is much different from Yellow Scallops (Zheltye Grebeshki)… Looking at the descriptions and honestly can’t find a big difference.

Definitely different! Yellow Scallops are true yellow (not orange), fruits are smaller, they’re flattened elegant little hearts and not nearly as meaty. Just compare them:
Got it, thanks. Svetikk, I assume you grew both. Which one did you like better flavor-wise?

Both are favorites because of how pretty they are, taste, and reliable yield every year. But Fox Nose gets an A+++ for flavor (superb!) when ripened on the vine in a warm greenhouse, while Yellow Scallops gets a solid A (excellent).
Makes sense, thanks again. Tough choice 😢 …guess I’ll have to plant both and see for myself. Will definitely report back with the results.. 😋
How did this one slip past me??? Going to go dig through my seed stash to see if anyone sent it to me, I absolutely love orange ones!
Full Summary: Plant, Yield, Taste and Storage
- 🌿 Plant: Indeterminate oxheart. Growers consistently report that it is an extremely vigorous, heavy, tree-like vine that requires serious staking, often snapping twine under the weight of the fruit. The tomatoes are large, yellow-orange hearts weighing 8.8 oz to well over 1 lb (250-500+ g). The true “Fox Nose” strain has a very distinct, sharp nipple/point on the blossom end.
- 📈 Yield: Exceptionally high for a large oxheart, though some growers in colder climates found it to be a late-season bloomer that requires patience.
- 👅 Taste: Universally loved. Described as incredibly sweet, fruity, and meaty, with very few seeds. Many growers note they eat it straight up like fruit rather than slicing it into salads.
- 📦 Storage: Excellent. Unripe fruits picked late in the season ripen beautifully on the counter without losing their signature buttery texture or sweetness.
- 🌎 Who Reviewed It: Extensively grown and shared among members across Russia, Belarus, and Europe (USDA Zones 3-6).
The conversation in this thread serves as a perfect piece of tomato history. The original commercial variety was simply named Orange Heart (from the Russian company Poisk). A prominent forum member (Vera/tomatinka) nicknamed her exceptionally pointed strain “Liskin Nos” (Fox Nose). As seed savers traded it across borders, it eventually made its way onto international platforms like eBay under the translated name “Fox Nose.” Today, seed catalogs worldwide sell “Fox Nose” as a highly sought-after heirloom, and its origins can be traced directly back to this exact forum community!
