Ocean (Okean) Tomato Review: Italian Cocktail

Share your rating
🍅 Quick take: Ocean (Okean) is a vigorous, indeterminate Italian cocktail/cherry variety producing glossy red, globe-shaped fruits up to 0.8 oz (23 g). Known for its distinct, apple-crisp bite, sweet flavor, crack resistance, and exceptionally sparse canopy. Northern greenhouse growers report remarkable resistance to greenhouse leaf mold (Cladosporium), making it a reliable, heavy-setting producer that easily supports multi-leader pruning. Another fantastic cherry tomato. Honestly, they lean more toward cocktail size than true bite-sized cherries. Italian seed line, big shoutout to Angelina for sending these my way! 💐Tall indeterminate plant, sturdy frame, but the foliage is quirky: stiff, curled in, and very sparse. I barely had to prune any leaves at all to open the canopy to the sun. Grew it in the greenhouse trained to three leaders. Topped the vines in the second half of July, and every single truss set fruit without dropping a blossom.

The tomatoes are delicious, firm, and snap with an apple-like crunch. Very productive variety and super unique habit overall.

Ocean. Indeterminate, absolute winner of a cherry variety, pretty as a picture and cranks out fruit! The tomatoes are red, round, and on the larger side for cherries, clocking in up to 0.8 oz (23 g), and sweet! Ran it in the greenhouse pruned to 5-6 stems, and it just kept pumping out fruit for a really long season. Zero cracking, no fruit drop at all, firm and springy to the touch. 👍

Heavy yielder, great flavor, and practically bulletproof against leaf mold. Even though it sat right in the middle of plants completely covered in cladosporium, it didn’t catch a thing. Not a single blemish on the leaves.Pruned it down to two stems this round. It is definitely going back in the dirt next season, and I’ll leave at least 4 leaders on it next time. The vine is a vigorous beast and has plenty of horsepower to carry that kind of load.

Full Summary: Plant, Yield, Taste and Disease Resistance

  • 🌿 Plant: Indeterminate vine originating from Italian seed stock. Displays a distinct vegetative habit: stiff, curled, very sparse foliage that allows maximum light infiltration and practically eliminates the need for summer leaf thinning. Vigorous enough to easily handle multi-stem training (up to 4-6 leaders).
  • 📈 Yield & Fruit Specs: High, steady producer with an extended harvest window. Fruit size sits comfortably between a large cherry and a cocktail tomato, reaching up to 0.8 oz (23 g). Excellent truss set with zero blossom drop reported. Skin is crack-resistant and fruit does not drop prematurely from the vine.
  • 👅 Taste & Texture: Sweet and rich with a crisp, firm, apple-like snap when bitten into.
  • 🛡️ Disease Resistance: Outstanding resistance to leaf mold (Passalora fulva / Cladosporium). Maintained completely spot-free green foliage while surrounded by heavily diseased neighbor vines inside high-humidity unheated greenhouses.
  • 🌎 Grower Reports: Reviewed by three gardeners located across USDA Zones 3 and 4 (Arkhangelsk, Sverdlovsk, and Moscow regions), demonstrating high adaptability to cold, short-season climates under unheated cover.
