Quick Summary of Priz Ispytaniy (Prize of the Trials)

  • 🌍 Origin: A fantastic Russian variety. The name translates to “Prize of the Trials”.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall), mid-season variety. Typically grows to about 1.6–1.8 meters (5.2–6 ft). It is highly reliable and sets fruit perfectly without dropping blossoms (no blossom drop). It may take a little time to build momentum, usually reaching peak production by late summer (August).
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Bright orange, perfectly round fruits that look like little ping-pong balls. Size ranges from large cherry to cocktail size, weighing up to 50–60g (1.7–2.1 oz). The skin is firm and crack-resistant.
  • 👅 Flavor: Very sweet, highly aromatic, and flavorful with a delicious savory/spicy undertone. Pro Tip: Let them hang on the vine for a while after turning orange to achieve maximum sweetness.
  • 🥗 Culinary Use: Excellent for snacking straight off the bush. Thanks to its firm skin and meaty texture, it is also highly recommended for making sun-dried tomatoes.

Seeds were from Lidia 💖. It is an indeterminate, mid-season variety, 1.6–1.8m (5.2–6 ft) tall, with very tasty, sweet, and aromatic bright orange cherry-type fruits. They have a firm skin and weigh up to 60g (2.1 oz).

It took a little time to get going, really hitting its stride closer to August, and then the whole bush was loaded with bright orange little balls. It is absolutely excellent for sun-drying, and the taste has a nice spicy/savory note 😋😋😋

I couldn’t find it in our catalog before 🙈🙈

I grew it this season! The seeds were from @Mila, and I followed her advice to let them hang on the vine for a while to fully ripen!

I really liked this variety; the bush was absolutely covered in little orange spheres. The tomatoes are cocktail-sized, about 50–60g (1.7–2.1 oz). There was no blossom drop at all, and every single flower set fruit.

I just don’t have a good picture of them on the bush because I kept constantly snacking on them straight off the vine. 😄
