Quick Summary of Plissirovannyy Serdolik (Pleated Carnelian)

  • 🌍 Origin: The Russian name translates to “Pleated Carnelian,” which perfectly describes its gem-like reddish-brown color and heavily ruffled shape.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: A vigorous indeterminate (tall) variety. Performs very well in greenhouses when pruned to 2 stems (leaders).
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Deep reddish-brown, deeply ribbed (accordion or flower-shaped) beefsteaks. Fruits can range from 300g (10.5 oz) up to a massive 600g (1.3 lbs). They look absolutely stunning on a cross-section.
  • 👅 Flavor & Texture: The flesh is very dense, meaty, and occasionally on the drier side. While the juicy fruits have a good classic flavor, this variety is generally grown more for its breathtaking, show-stopping appearance rather than gourmet taste.
  • 🥗 Culinary Use: Makes an incredible visual statement on a slicing platter or in a fresh salad.

Plissirovannyy Serdolik (Pleated Carnelian) is a very spectacular and highly productive variety. It’s a vigorous indeterminate; I grew it in the greenhouse trained to 2 stems.

The fruits are reddish-brown, heavily pleated/ribbed, shaped like a flower, and quite large—reaching up to 600g (1.3 lbs). They are absolutely beautiful when sliced! Some fruits were on the drier side, but the juicy ones had a perfectly good taste. Seeds were from Mila.

It’s a true centerpiece of the greenhouse! And the fact that the taste isn’t a perfect A+… well, it reminds me of an old joke about a famous singer: “You don’t even need to sing, just walk back and forth on the stage so we can look at you and applaud!” 😄

A very beautiful variety. Mine weighed around 300g (10.5 oz), and the yield was average for me. It looks fantastic when sliced for a platter.

I’m very sorry to say, but this variety turned out to be a complete disappointment for me. It had an average yield and average-sized fruits.

The taste was also just average—very meaty but on the dry side, making it awkward to slice. But what a beauty! You simply can’t take your eyes off it! It looks like a flower, not a tomato.
