Super Runner (Supergonets) Tomato: 10-Year Seed Viability Test

Quick Summary of Super Runner (Supergonets)

  • 🌍 Origin & Name: A Russian commercial dwarf variety from the SeDek seed company. The name “Supergonets” loosely translates to “Super Runner” or “Super Messenger”, implying speed and earliness.
  • 🌱 Seed Viability Phenomenon: A massive point of interest for seed savers: one forum grower successfully germinated a commercial packet of these seeds that had expired nearly a decade prior (expiration date 12.2004), achieving an impressive 50% germination rate!
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: The commercial packet claims the suckers behave like an indeterminate, but real growers debunk this. It is a true, compact tree-type dwarf (штамбовый) with a thick, sturdy central stem. It grows to about 50-70 cm (20-27 inches) tall and requires very little maintenance.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Small, round, red cocktail tomatoes. Average weight is 50-70g (1.8-2.5 oz). The skin is notably thin.
  • 👅 Flavor: Unlike many commercial early dwarfs which can be bland, growers confirm this one lives up to the hype. It is very sweet, juicy, and perfect for snacking straight off the vine.

I should note that I grow everything outdoors in open ground.

My seeds of the Supergonets variety were from SeDek, with an expiration date of 12.2004, which didn’t stop them from germinating at about a 50% rate. This is what was promised on the packet:

It turned out to be, indeed, a true tree-type dwarf with a sturdy stem, about 50cm (20 inches) tall; the suckers didn’t “grow indeterminately” anywhere as the packet suggested. The fruits are little round red ones, up to 60 grams (2.1 oz). Mid-early.

But as for the taste, surprisingly, the seller didn’t lie – they are really tasty, juicy, with noticeable sweetness. I think the skin might be a bit too thin for canning in jars (but absolutely great for just popping in your mouth), although you could try.

Mid-early, high-yielding tree-type (dwarf) variety. The plant has an indeterminate growth habit of its suckers (which is very rare for tree-type varieties), height 60-80 cm (24-31 inches). Fruits are oblate, red, weighing 80-100 g (2.8-3.5 oz), with an increased content of sugar and dry matter. Produces stable high yields regardless of summer weather conditions.

My Supergonets, seeds from dear Galina (Esme) 😘

It grew in a film greenhouse, a sturdy tree-type dwarf bush about 70cm (27 inches) tall, turned out to be mid-season and productive. It set a lot of red tomatoes around 50-70g (1.8-2.5 oz), with a good taste.
