Quick Summary of Topklipsa
- 🌍 Origin: A highly reliable commercial Russian heirloom. Growers note that it is virtually identical to another popular variety called Slavyanka.
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate and incredibly tall (easily reaches the greenhouse roof), but it has a very distinct “slender vine” habit. It doesn’t grow wide or bushy, which allows for very dense planting (some growers plant up to 7 plants per square meter / ~1 plant per 1.5 sq. ft).
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Beautiful, elongated pinkish-red plums/icicles. They usually weigh up to 80g (2.8 oz) and feature very thick, meaty walls.
- 👅 Flavor & Texture: Sweet and excellent in taste. While they are great for fresh salads, their true calling is processing.
- 🎯 Best Uses: The absolute perfect shape and size for whole-fruit canning in jars. Thanks to the thick walls, they are also phenomenal for making sun-dried tomatoes.
- 📈 Performance: A true “workhorse” variety. It produces early and continues fruiting right up until the first frost. It boasts excellent disease resistance and reliably sets fruit even in extreme greenhouse heat without dropping blossoms.
Topklipsa is a wonderful variety, the seeds were from V. Redko.
This year I also grew a variety called Slavyanka from the Gisok seed company, and it turned out to be a complete analogue of Topklipsa; I couldn’t find any differences. The taste is exactly the same—absolutely excellent for my palate! 👍
I also loved this variety for both its yield and taste. I grew it for the first time this year. Svetlana, thank you for the seeds! 🌹 It has early and prolonged fruiting. And what is very important, it set fruit perfectly during the extreme heat in the greenhouse.
I immediately fell in love with this variety. It didn’t grow wide and bushy, but set excellent trusses. Didn’t catch any diseases. It is the ultimate canning variety, and because the walls are so thick, it’s also perfect for sun-drying. I am keeping it in my permanent rotation and sending it out as gifts to other forum members.
I liked Topklipsa. Quite productive, sweetish taste, weight up to 80g (2.8 oz). The only thing is it grows very tall, right up to the ceiling.
I liked the variety very much. It grows right next to Bonaparte F1, and their fruit load is almost identical (Bonaparte just a tiny bit higher). This is a true “workhorse” variety, it sets a massive amount of fruit with zero skipped trusses. As for the plant habit—it is a very slender vine, taking up very little space, which easily allows you to plant up to 7 plants per square meter (~1 plant per 1.5 sq ft) without them being too crowded.
The taste is mostly for canning, but you can definitely use it in salads too. The shape and size are ideal for whole-fruit canning.
I received it as a bonus gift in a seed order, which made me very happy. I’m keeping it for annual planting.
