Quick Summary of Ultrafiolet (Ultraviolet)
- 🌍 Origin: A rare dark-fruited variety sent to Russian collectors in 2010 by Ukrainian tomato breeder D.G. Terentyev.
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall), vigorous, and forms a massive, strong plant (“like a tree”). Interestingly, it starts out looking very weak and wispy as a seedling, but explodes with growth once planted out. Produces a lot of suckers. Highly disease-resistant and adaptable—it can be grown in large barrels outdoors or in a greenhouse.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Dark purple/brown cocktail-sized round balls, typically weighing 70-80 g (2.5-2.8 oz). They grow in abundant clusters of 5 to 7 fruits. The interior features a dense, jelly-like dark purple flesh.
- 👅 Flavor: Very pleasant, rich, and well-balanced flavor, characteristic of good dark tomatoes.
- ⏳ Maturity & Yield: Mid-late season. It takes a bit longer to start ripening compared to early varieties, but it yields heavily and consistently until the end of the season.
I got the seeds from Nina, and she got them from Natalya.
Cherry/cocktail type, indet, dark-colored, mid-late season.
Mine was moderately pushy with suckers (produced a lot of them). And it was very flimsy/wispy as a seedling.
Sowed dry seeds directly in the soil on March 12, the first ripe fruit was on July 27 (for comparison, Kazakhskiy Zheltyi sown the exact same way had ripe fruit by June 30).

I am correcting myself and providing a description for this variety 🙂
This variety was sent to me back in 2010 by Ukrainian breeder D.G. Terentyev.
The plant is vigorous, strong, characterized by high fruit set even in the open ground, and is resistant to various kinds of diseases. The fruits are gathered in clusters of 5-7 pieces, round balls up to 70-80 g (2.5-2.8 oz), very pleasant taste, with dense jelly-like flesh inside, dark purple in color.
I grew it in a large barrel, outdoors, and immediately started forming it into multiple stems. At the beginning of growth, over the still small plant, I put 2 hoops criss-cross and covered the barrel with plastic film.
Later on, I just had to put up a long pole and tie all the stems to it. I couldn’t cover it anymore… It withstood all temperature fluctuations and kept healthy, thick foliage until the end of the season. And how beautiful this tall plant with tomatoes looked amidst a blooming flowerbed!
This season I decided to once again test this variety for endurance in the open ground 🙂 I even had a barrel ready for growing it… but a premonition kicked in – better not do it 🤷♀️
Even though I had persistently recommended it specifically for outdoors to Nelly 😳
But back in February-March, we didn’t know what awaited us this crazy summer…
As a result, I am growing an Ultraviolet tree (exactly that) 🙌 🙌 in a polycarbonate greenhouse. It’s a strong, incredibly tall plant with 4 stems, its tops are now pressing against the greenhouse roof… The trusses are heavy, ripening fully on the plant, I gave it a large space on the central bed right at the entrance.
Below, at its feet, several bushes of “Ryabinovye busy” (Rowan Beads) were planted, and when they bloomed en masse – the sight was mesmerizing…
