Quick Summary of Zhenskaya Grud
📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Zhenskaya Grud
- 🌍 Origin: A Russian heirloom oxheart variety. The name “Zhenskaya Grud” translates to “Woman’s Breast”, named for its distinct shape. There is also a very similar (or possibly identical) strain circulating under the name “Devichya Grud” (Maiden’s Breast).
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate. Grows to about 5.2 – 5.5 ft (1.6 – 1.7 m). Like many classic oxhearts, it features fine, wispy, and somewhat droopy foliage. It is well-behaved and doesn’t produce an overwhelming amount of suckers.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Large, pink, meaty hearts. The shape can vary slightly from fruit to fruit, but they generally have a blunt heart shape with a pronounced tip. Bonus: Not prone to green or yellow shoulders.
- 👅 Flavor: Very sweet, rich, and not bland at all. The flesh is dense and meaty with very few seeds.
I received this wonderful variety under this exact name. I grew it in the greenhouse. Like most oxheart varieties, the foliage is wispy and droopy. It doesn’t push out too many suckers. It’s indeterminate and got to about 5.2 – 5.5 ft (1.6 – 1.7 m) tall.
The tomatoes varied a bit in shape, but they were meaty and sweet with very few seeds. I also really liked that it didn’t get any yellow shoulders.
How would you rate the yield on this one?
Sveta, the yield was just average for me. But as you can see in the photo, the clusters didn’t fully set.
I actually grew “Devichya Grud” (Maiden’s Breast) 🙂. It might just be the exact same strain as Zhenskaya (Woman’s) 🙂, especially looking at the massive size of these things 😂. I really liked this little tomato. Great yield and flavor, definitely not bland at all. Grew it outdoors in the open ground.
If you’re wondering about the quirky name (Zhenskaya Grud / Woman’s Breast), it’s a common naming convention among Russian heirloom growers. Many blunt, rounded oxhearts that develop a pronounced tip at the blossom end are given playful, anatomical names. You’ll often see this variety, or very close relatives, circulating under the name Devichya Grud (Maiden’s Breast) as well. Regardless of the name, these are fantastic, meaty, sweet pink tomatoes!
