Grower’s Field Notes and Photos (USDA Zone 8 Experience)
First year running Petit Chocolat. Another true “mini-beefsteak” style cherry (similar build to Yablonelistnyi): multi-locular interior chambers, nicely balanced sweet-tart flavor, rated a solid 4.5 out of 5 on taste. Easily out-yielded Yablonelistnyi.
Rain Crack Resistance, Sucker Vigor, and Blight Notes
One vine was tucked under a shelter cover and held fruit all the way through late September. The outdoor open-ground vine had to be pulled early once late blight moved in, but surprisingly, the outdoor plant actually pumped out a heavier overall harvest before going down. Maturity ranks right around mid-season.
These cherries are firm and tough: zero splitting from rain, not a single cracked fruit. Never got around to canning any because we scarfed them all down fresh right off the vine.
We didn’t prune a single sucker, and even the lowest side shoots right near the soil line fruited heavily. Seeds were purchased locally over here.

Full Summary: Growth Habit, Splitting Tolerance, Flavor, and Yield
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate cocktail vine with energetic branching. Thrives with zero sucker pruning, setting heavy trusses even on low basal shoots.
- 🍅 Fruit Anatomy: Dusky chocolate-brown cocktail/large cherry (~1-1.5 oz / 30-45 g). Characterized as a “mini-beefsteak” due to its multi-locular seed structure, offering more meaty wall tissue than standard two-celled cherries.
- 🌧️ Splitting Resilience: Exceptional rain resistance. Skins remain intact and firm without radial or concentric cracking during autumn rains.
- 👅 Flavor Profile: Bold, rich sweet-and-sour profile typical of the best black/purple heirlooms, scoring a 4.5/5 on flavor.
- 🛡️ Disease Pressure: Standard heirloom foliage susceptibility to late blight (Phytophthora infestans) in damp late-season open ground; overhead plastic covers significantly extend the harvest window into October.
- 🌎 Trial Conditions: Grown along the maritime climate border of Western Germany, France, and Luxembourg (USDA Zone 8).
Grower Elena references Petit Chocolat as a “mini-beefsteak.” In tomato morphology, most standard cherry tomatoes (like Sweet 100 or Black Cherry) are strictly 2-locular (two seed gel chambers). Certain European cocktail heirlooms feature 3 to 5 internal chambers packed into a 1.5-inch fruit. This structural difference yields a firmer, meatier bite with less seed squirt, making them much less likely to split open after heavy summer rains.
