Purple Brandy Tomato Review & Photos

Share your rating
🍅 Quick take: Purple Brandy is a celebrated potato-leaf (PL) indeterminate heirloom beefsteak bred by New Jersey heirloom pioneer Joe Bratka (a cross of Brandywine × Marizol Purple). It bears hefty, flattened dark-pink beefsteaks with smoky purple undertones. Universally praised across the forum for having one of the finest, most harmonious sweet-to-acid flavor profiles in the tomato world, it stays polite and manageable in stature compared to other sprawling Brandywine lines. Indeterminate, mid-season, high-yielding salad variety. Fruits are medium to large, flattened oblate beefsteaks in a dusky dark pink with purple overtones.Flavor is OUTSTANDING 😋: rich sweetness and brisk acidity in complete, flawless balance. Absolutely fell in love with this variety. Foliage should be potato-leaf type, though I honestly forgot to log my exact seedling leaf type at planting time.

Lena, does “Brandy” mean this is a Brandywine strain?

No, Elena, it is not standard Brandywine.

Sooooo delicious! Yield was on the lower side for me, but I am hoping saved seeds from my own vine step up next season.True potato-leaf foliage on a sturdy vine. Inside the greenhouse, it stayed very compact and polite, maybe 4 ft (1.2 m) at most. Thoroughly impressed. Big shoutout to ElenaN for the seeds! 🙏

Super tasty and juicy. The vine does not stretch out crazy tall, never climbed all the way to the greenhouse rafters. Trained mine to two leaders.Purple Brandy beefsteak ripening on vine, photo posted by ElenaPr (1)

Grew Purple Brandy a couple seasons back. It was productive, delicious, and did not run late at all. Very worthy heirloom.

Grew this outdoors under low hoop tunnels. Cannot recall the exact leaf type off the top of my head, but the vine was stout and stocky, stopping right around 4 ft (1.2 m).Yield came in well above average, ripening mid-early. Good flavor. Definitely earned a return ticket to my outdoor beds next season.

Under greenhouse glass, this variety proved to be heavy yielding and tall. Fruits are large, dusky dark pink, sweet, and bursting with juice. Definitely has the potato-leaf foliage trait.Purple Brandy large ripe beefsteak tomato, photo posted by ilja (1)

Full Summary: Plant Habit, Fruit Size, Flavor, and Culture

  • 🌿 Plant Type: Indeterminate vine with distinct potato-leaf (PL) foliage. Features a remarkably manageable, sturdy stature that often tops out around 4 ft (1.2 m) in open ground under hoops, but climbs taller when trained to 1-2 leaders in a greenhouse.
  • 🍅 Fruit Quality: Medium to large oblate beefsteaks (8-16 oz / 220-450 g). Rich dusky pink skin with purple-burgundy undertones. Solid, multi-locular interior with deep crimson, juicy flesh.
  • 👅 Flavor Profile: Rated by multiple growers as a benchmark for heirloom flavor. Strikingly rich, full-bodied heirloom taste combining high natural sweetness with a brisk, assertive acid bite.
  • 📈 Yield & Ripening: Mid-season to mid-early. Sets fruit reliably in cool climates and under low outdoor hoop structures, out-yielding traditional fickle Brandywine strains.
  • 🧬 Variety Clarification: Distinct from Brandywine, Purple. Purple Brandy is a specific stabilized cross of Brandywine and Marizol Purple bred by Joe Bratka.
  • 🌎 Reviewers: Tested across multiple cold-season microclimates in USDA Zone 4 (Kostroma, Kolomna, Stupino, and Klin).
👨‍🌾 Editor’s Note: Joe Bratka’s Breeding & The “Purple Brandy” Lineage
Purple Brandy was developed by legendary New Jersey heirloom seed saver Joe Bratka, famous for introducing varieties like Isis Candy and Marizol Gold. Bratka crossed the legendary Brandywine with the German heirloom Marizol Purple, selecting for Brandywine’s rich potato-leaf foliage and complex gourmet flavor while inheriting earlier maturity and better blossom setting. It should not be confused with Brandywine, Purple (a natural dark mutation or distinct cross often associated with Tom Hauch of Heirloom Seeds).
