📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Barskiy
- 🌍 Origin: A Russian/Eastern European heirloom variety circulated among private seed collectors. The name “Barskiy” translates to “Lord’s” or “Noble’s,” implying a grand, high-status tomato.
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate. A tall, very robust and sturdy vine with thick stems and large, non-drooping leaves. Can easily reach 2.5 meters (8+ ft) in a greenhouse. Despite its vigor, it is described as “slender” in terms of not throwing out an excessive amount of suckers. Shows excellent heat tolerance and does not drop blossoms during hot spells.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Very large, heavy, chubby red oxhearts/beefsteaks. They do not suffer from cracking and ripen evenly without hard green/yellow shoulders or tough internal white tissue.
- 👅 Flavor & Texture: Highly rated. The flesh is dense, sugary, and often described as having a “watermelon-like” sparkling texture on the break.
- ⏳ Yield: Good to excellent (around 5 kg / 11 lbs per plant). Often produces some of the largest fruits of the season for growers.

The bush is indeterminate, slender, didn’t sin by throwing out excessive suckers. Grew in the greenhouse, trained to two stems. The overall yield wasn’t bad, there were six tomatoes, all large, the largest one is in the photo.
A very worthy variety. It also produced the largest fruits of the season for me. Heavy, dense. Had about 5 kilograms (11 lbs) per plant. Grew in a polycarbonate greenhouse, handled the heat well. There were no hard shoulders or tough internal white tissue. One of the best reds of the 2017 season in terms of taste. It’s staying in my collection. 👍
So far I really like how this variety is behaving. Unlike most other varieties, it doesn’t drop many blossoms.
The bushes are very sturdy, with thick stems and large, non-drooping leaves. They are already nearly two meters (6.5 ft) tall.
Waiting for them to ripen.
And here is my Barskiy ripening. Yes, I really love it. The bushes are powerful, the stems are thick, currently over 2.5 meters (8.2 ft) tall.
Tasty, productive.
The fruits are chubby red hearts, they don’t crack.
The seeds arrived from Belarus from Lenochka-Stolin.
