Ananas Noire (Black Pineapple) Tomato Review

A friend from another forum ordered seeds of this variety from Solana (Canada) and shared some with me.

The color of the fruits is peculiar. The taste is good, you can definitely feel the sweetness. Meaty, not dry. Not too many seeds, but they are there. Maturity is mid-season. The bush is indeterminate, quite sturdy (much stronger than Qingdao, but Qingdao has a more interesting color).

📝 And it’s not black at all, Galochka. But probably just as delicious as all the pineapple varieties.

Katya, that’s exactly the point, it’s somewhat greenish-brownish. But the seeds were from a commercial packet, so I guess that’s how it’s supposed to be.

Galya, it seems to me it’s closer to the green varieties. I had the exact same one. But my bush got sick, so I barely had time to examine and taste it 😞. I will try growing it again next year.

📝 I ordered it from Popenko [famous Russian seed collector], so this season we’ll be tasting all the pineapples.

It’s supposed to be prettier than mine, it seems.

My Black Pineapple seeds were from Popenko. I ended up with two different types, it seems. But both bushes were sickly, their leaves turned black.

Yes, but which one of them is the true pineapple? I liked the one with the red notes better. That’s the one I saved seeds from.

Yes, I expected a better taste. There are tastier black tomatoes out there.

And this is how my Black Pineapple turned out. The taste is good!

BLACK PINEAPPLES (ANANAS NOIRE).
This unparalleled variety was perhaps the discovery of the season. The fruits of this variety are very large, weighing up to 500 g (17.6 oz), with magnificent taste and unique coloring: greenish-brown on the outside, and pink-red-green-yellow on the inside! Simply cut into wedges, this tomato can become the main centerpiece of the table. Mid-season, plant height is 1.2-1.5 m (4-5 ft).

This year, from Popenko’s seeds, I grew two different colored Pineapples. One was tri-color, beautiful and tasty, grew outdoors in open ground, and was very prolific. The second one grew in the greenhouse (two bushes), the fruits were much greener, closer to green-fruited varieties in color, less tasty, and less prolific… which of them is the real one? I’ll upload photos of the green one later, I forgot my flash drive at work…

Here is a photo of my Black Pineapple which is closer to the green varieties in color, as I mentioned earlier… they turned out different.

They turned out so different in color, taste, and yield. The seeds were from Gusev and from Popenko.

My Black Pineapple was this color. But also very tasty, it has some kind of fruity taste. 😋

My Black Pineapple. The bush is about 1.20 m (4 ft) tall. It set about 5 fruits on two trusses, no less than 300 g (10.5 oz) each. It hasn’t grown taller yet.

Here is my Black Pineapple from Irina Vladimirovna.

Cut open, it is simply incomparable! 👍 Large, sets fruit well. The bush is compact. I waited a long time for it to turn red, but it turns out this is just its normal color… 😳 Delicious!!!

And here is my “Black Pineapple”: tasty, sweet, large. Mine has more red in it.

Tasty, sweet. Mine turned out to be of an irregular shape. For comparison below is the Kiwi variety from Valentina, also very tasty.

Here is my handsome boy! A very beautiful, and most importantly, tasty tomato! 😋 And very prolific. Grew outdoors in open ground.

Black Pineapple (Ananas Noire), seeds from “Schastlivy Sad”. Description from their website: (Belgium). Oblate fruits, weighing up to 1 kg (2.2 lbs), salad type. Color is brown with blurred green flecks. Flesh is green-brown, exquisite taste. Tall variety.

Mine grew outdoors, about 1.3 meters (4.2 ft) tall. When the heat wave arrived, the fruits started to bake in the sun. The first fruits ripened in mid-July. By color, the tomatoes were green with a light pink bottom. I was also waiting for them to finally turn red 😄.

I liked the taste, there is sweetness, but it’s not cloying. In cross-section, they are very beautiful tomatoes, and each fruit inside has a different pattern of raspberry-colored stripes.

In the direct sun, mine are also pale, but down below under the leaves they became very beautiful.

In the photo, you can see where it was covered by leaves (and I also covered it with pieces of shade cloth on top), versus where the sun hit it. Height was also under 1.5 meters (5 ft). But that’s outdoors; in a greenhouse, it would probably grow taller.

I only have one ripe fruit so far. It’s late for me. But the bushes, although not tall, are very healthy, with turquoise-colored foliage and beautiful pubescence (fuzz). Many other varieties have already turned yellow and caught cladosporiosis (leaf mold), but this one is an amazingly healthy variety.

A big plus for that. It sizes up the fruits slowly for me—until I picked the first one in the truss, the rest didn’t grow much. I’ll see how it gets going towards autumn, we are just having our first warm days of the whole summer.
