📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Calvados (Kalvados)
- 🌍 Origin: Sourced and distributed by prominent Ukrainian seed collector Alexey Kulik. The name refers to the famous French apple brandy, Calvados.
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall), but growth varies heavily by climate. Usually reaches about 4 to 5 feet (1.2-1.5 m) out in the dirt, and can push 5.5 to 6.5 feet (1.7-2 m) in a greenhouse.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Dark chocolate/burgundy oblate beefsteaks. Average weight is around 7-11 oz (200-300 g), though some growers report pushing them up to 14-17 oz (400-500 g).
- 👅 Flavor: Consistently rated as one of the best-tasting black tomatoes. It is juicy (not watery, but properly juicy) with a rich, dense flavor profile and a noticeable tangy kick.
Tell me, friends, is Calvados an indeterminate or determinate?
I searched around the forum and found a catalog stating the height is 5.2 feet (160 cm).
I found it on a Ukrainian site through a search engine. I won’t post the link because a sketchy banner popped up over there, lol.
Mid-season, indeterminate, 6 feet (1.8 m), fruits 14-17 oz (400-500 g), dark brown, oblate. The absolute best dark-fruited variety. Fruits are clustered in large trusses, tasty, sweet.
Grew it out in the dirt, planted it late around April 10th. It was probably a little under 3 feet (1 m) tall. I’m guessing in a greenhouse it would easily hit 5 feet (1.5 m), but I’m not so sure about 6 feet (1.8 m). I wouldn’t call the plant super vigorous, but the yield is great. Kulik lists it at 4 feet (1.2 m).
Planted Calvados in the greenhouse in 2014, and it really impressed me. Grew to almost 5.5 feet (1.7 m). Plus, a very good yield and excellent taste.
Tasty, juicy tomato. Yield was average. It got over 6.5 feet (2 m) in the greenhouse.
I liked it.
I agree with everything said above, but for me, it was completely identical to Chernaya Ulybka (Black Smile)! The color and the texture, not to mention the plants themselves – I started having doubts just looking at the vines. Today I sliced them both open and made my husband and myself take alternating bites of each to see if we could spot any differences. We couldn’t find a single one. He thought one of them was a tiny bit more tart, and I thought it was the other way around, lol.

So they are basically twin varieties? Which one are you going to plant next year?
Seeds from Shevchuk (Ukraine).
– Plant habit: mid-late, moderately sprawling.
– Fruit set: didn’t skip any trusses, the top trusses ripened all the way out.
– Plant height outdoors on Aug 15th: 5.2 feet (1.6 m).
– Trusses: 2-4 fruits per cluster.
– Overall yield: average.
– Fruit: round, chocolate color with a burgundy tint.
– Density when ripe: high.
– Flavor: dense, juicy, with a noticeable tang. Sweetness gets a 4/5 rating.
Initial impression: a tomato for processing and canning. The downside is the average yield. Rating for seedlings – 4, plant – 4, fruit – 4, overall variety rating – 4.
Ninulia: “…it was completely identical to Chernaya Ulybka (Black Smile)!”
Ninulya, what do you think about Chernaya Ulybka (Black Smile)? It practically begs the question if it’s just a different translation of the same original name…
Calvados definitely earned a permanent spot for me. I really loved it this past season.
Grew it for the first time in 2016. Had 1 plant in a glass greenhouse pruned to 2 stems. Yielded 10 fruits with an average weight of 10.5 oz (300 g). Good taste. When sliced in a salad with a little salt – it’s incredibly delicious! (Although for me, the best black tomato for eating straight up with no salt is still Qingdao). Calvados is the top one in the photo, Black Prince is below it. The weight on that one is 12.5 oz (360 g).

Lenchik! How tall did it actually get for you outdoors? 🙂

Lena, definitely over 3 feet (1 m). Probably right around 4 feet (1.2 m).
Tasty, juicy. Will definitely repeat it. The yield was pretty low, but that was just my bad gardening practices failing me. Very worthy dark tomato.
Wow, really! 😮 It was the absolute heaviest yielder and earliest ripener for me, but! completely tasteless 🙁
Olya, I really loved it, and the fruits were large too. Good taste and great yield 👍
Repeated it this year. Taste was not bad. It dropped a lot of blossoms during the heatwave in the greenhouse. But then it started setting fruits from the tiny nubs that were left. Persistent little guy)))
