📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Carmella’s Yellow Stripes
- 🌍 Origin: A beautiful striped bicolor heirloom variety.
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall). Produces sturdy, beautiful seedlings. Interestingly, growers report variations in leaf type—some plants display a Potato Leaf (PL) trait.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Large beefsteaks weighing 300-400 g (10.5-14 oz). The skin and flesh are stunning: pinkish-red marbled with yellow stripes and swirls.
- 👅 Flavor: Highly rated, very sweet and tasty, typical of quality bicolor heirlooms.
- ⚠️ Growing Note: Can be quite finicky regarding fruit set. Several growers experienced blossom drop or delayed fruit set on the lower trusses, often finally setting fruit much later in the season.
Indeterminate, mid-season variety, bicolor. The bush is sturdy and looks beautiful as a seedling. Mine grew with potato leaves (PL). Tatiana’s TOMATObase doesn’t specify the leaf type for this one.
The fruits are pinkish-red with yellow streaks and stripes, weighing 300-400 g (10.5-14 oz), very tasty and sweet. It grew outdoors in open ground, but the yield was below average for me. My seeds were from V. Redko.
My seeds were from Popenko. This is the only variety that completely failed for me this year. I planted two bushes, they flowered, but didn’t set a single fruit 😞

Ira, exactly the same here. It grew in the greenhouse. I got mad and pulled it out at the end of July.

Lena, for me, it was the very last one to set fruit. Do you remember what the leaf type was? I just remembered: the first trusses either didn’t form any fruit at all or dropped the blossoms. What you see in my photos actually grew from the second trusses.
