📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Italian Stallion Giallo
- 🌍 Origin: A yellow mutation/variant of the classic red Italian Stallion heirloom.
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate. A robust, disease-resistant plant with a long fruiting season. It performs well in both greenhouses and open ground.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Bright yellow to lemonade-colored fruits. Like its red counterpart, it produces variable shapes on the same plant, ranging from ribbed and blocky to oblate hearts. Typically weighs around 5 to 10 oz (150-300 g).
- 👅 Flavor: Meaty, buttery, and nearly seedless. Flavor is generally sweet with a slight tartness, though it requires plenty of sun to reach its full flavor potential.
Seller’s description: The shapes vary from twisted and ribbed to flattened hearts and blocks. Fruit weight is 5-10 oz (150-300 g). The flesh has a delicate lemonade hue, juicy and buttery, very meaty, and sweet with a hint of acidity. Thin skin. Produces all season long.
For me, it turned out to be a late season variety, but that’s mostly my own fault. My seedlings were just dying off this year. So the fact that it even survived in my conditions is a huge PLUS.
The harvest window really is long. To get the most out of it here in Siberia, it’s best to grow it in a greenhouse. You can run it outdoors in the dirt too, though, since it showed great disease resistance. I pulled my last plants super late, a good two weeks after all the stragglers had given up.
I don’t think it got enough sun to develop that perfect flavor, mostly because we had a very overcast and rainy summer. Still, it tasted good, just a bit on the tart side. I definitely recommend this meaty beauty.
