Elfin Tomato Review: Sweet Grape Cherry

Rate this

Quick Summary of Elfin

  • 🌍 Origin: A fantastic red grape/cherry tomato variety. Well-known and distributed by major Russian seed vendors like Gusev and Happy Garden.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (vining) and highly sprawling. It produces a massive amount of suckers. However, it is remarkably low-maintenance: many growers don’t bother pruning the suckers at all and simply tie the whole plant up like a sheaf. Height easily reaches 1.7 meters (5.6 ft) and keeps growing.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Red grape-type cherries with a slight teardrop shape. They are perfectly uniform and known for having a firm, snappy, crunchy texture. They rarely crack, both on the vine and when canned in jars.
  • 👅 Flavor: Very sweet, well-balanced, juicy, and with a delightful fruity note. A perfect snacking tomato.
  • Yield: Extremely prolific. It sets fruit continuously without skipping trusses all summer long.

I grew this tomato in the greenhouse. The plant is tall (indeterminate) and highly productive. The fruits are cherries, red in color, sweet. The only downside is a lot of suckers, but that’s probably a characteristic of most cherry tomatoes. My family really liked the variety. Seeds were from Gusev.

I also liked the variety, it grew outdoors in the open ground. Productive, sweet, the fruits are dense, they crunch, delicious!

Seeds from Happy Garden.

  • External description of the bush: the maximum number of suckers you can possibly imagine, a sprawling indeterminate.
  • Fruit setting: without skips, it sets fruit continuously all summer.
  • Bush height: on 24.07 – about 1.7m (5.6 ft), on 06.09 – 1.7m (5.6 ft), continues to set fruit massively.
  • Trusses: clustered, 6-8 tomatoes each, they start dropping from the bush only when they crack from being overripe.
  • Fruit: grape cherry (teardrop shape), perfectly uniform, one to one, they almost never crack in the canning jar.
  • Density of ripe fruit: high.
  • Taste: sweet, very balanced, firm (it even crunches!), juicy, with a slight fruity note.

First impression: a very tasty and insanely productive sweet cherry tomato with a long fruiting period.
Absolutely undemanding in care, since you don’t even have to pinch off the suckers, you can just tie them all up together like a sheaf.

Rating for seedlings – 5, bush – 5, fruit – 5, overall rating of the variety – 5.
