Kaleidoscopic Jewel Tomato Review & Photos

Share your rating
🍅 Quick take: Kaleidoscopic Jewel is a strikingly beautiful, indeterminate, mid-season anthocyanin variety bred by Brad Gates (Wild Boar Farms). Growers praise its heavy yields, slim plant profile, and sweet, meaty pink-raspberry flesh. However, some note that the strain seems unstable, throwing fruits of wildly varying shapes and sizes on the same plant, contrary to the original description of small oval fruits. Full summary ↓

Indet, mid-season variety from Brad Gates. The plant has a pretty slim profile. My fruits ended up all over the place in terms of size and shape, ranging from rounded plums to oblate, weighing anywhere from 2.5 to 6 oz (70-170 g), with the bigger ones coming from megablooms.

These tomatoes are absolute stunners, totally exotic looking with shades of red, cream, orange, and black-blue with purple striping and flecks. Very meaty with a pinkish-raspberry interior. The first ripe ones were pure sweet (honestly, I think it could use just a tiny bit of tartness for a perfect balance). After that, I didn’t even eat the later ones, just gave them all away to friends as novelty gifts. Extremely heavy yielder. Really fun variety to grow.

I do suspect this strain is unstable and probably got released a bit too early. The shapes vary wildly even on the exact same plant, whereas the original description says they should all be small and oval.

Extremely tasty and gorgeous variety! 👍 Huge thanks to Sveta 777 for sharing these seeds! This beauty weighed in at 4.8 oz (137 g). My season just started picking up recently, and right now this is hands down the best tasting one I’ve got growing. 😋

So glad you liked it, Katya! Mine was also super sweet and pumped out a ton of fruit last year.

Full Summary: Plant Habit, Taste, Yields, and Stability

  • 🌿 Plant & Foliage: Indeterminate, mid-season. The plant has a fairly slim profile, making it manageable in the greenhouse or open ground.
  • 🍅 Fruit Appearance & Size: Visually stunning with shades of red, cream, orange, and blue-black anthocyanin striping. Sizes varied greatly for some growers, from 2.5 to 6 oz (70-170 g), and shapes ranged from plums to flat-round oblate types. Larger fruits often developed from megablooms. Flesh is meaty and pink-raspberry colored.
  • 👅 Taste: Universally praised as very sweet. Elena felt it lacked just a touch of tartness for a perfect acid-sugar balance, while Katya found it to be the best-tasting tomato of her early season.
  • 📈 Yields & Stability: Highly productive and sets heavy trusses. However, it was noted by Elena that the strain appears somewhat unstable, throwing different fruit shapes on the same plant, contrary to Wild Boar Farms’ original description of consistent small ovals.
