Kalyani Tomato Review & Photos

📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Kalyani

  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall). A very sturdy, vigorous plant with heavy foliage cover. Reaches about 6.5 feet (2 m) tall in a greenhouse setting.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Large, oblate beefsteaks ranging from 14 to 17.5 oz (400-500 g). The color is a vibrant crimson-scarlet. The flesh is incredibly dense, heavy, and buttery, with tiny seed cavities.
  • 👅 Flavor: A complex, rich profile dominated by intense sweetness with just the right touch of subtle acidity to balance it out.
  • ⏳ Standout Feature: Unlike most heirloom beefsteaks, Kalyani has phenomenal holding ability. It stays firm on the vine even when fully colored, practically never splits, and boasts a surprisingly long shelf life indoors without losing flavor.

Indeterminate, sturdy plant with heavy foliage. Hit about 6.5 feet (2 m) tall in the greenhouse. The fruits are large, up to 14-17.5 oz (400-500 g), gorgeous, and absolutely delicious. Got my seeds from Yaroslavna (thank you!). I couldn’t find a thread for this fantastic variety in our catalog, so I decided to start one.

I started seeds early on February 29th for an early harvest. It stood out with its vigor and performed really well right from the seedling stage.

Overall, I really loved this variety. It pushed out large, beautiful beefsteaks of a very bright crimson-scarlet color. The fruits are oblate, super dense and heavy for their size, with plump shoulders and smooth ribbing. The flavor is rich and complex. You immediately hit this distinct, dominant sweetness that is perfectly balanced by a nice, subtle tang. The flesh is incredibly dense and buttery. The slices hold their shape perfectly when cut, and these tomatoes actually have a really good shelf life without losing their flavor. Absolutely zero splitting or cracking. The yield was pretty solid, even with the intense heat we had this summer. Obviously, it dropped a few blossoms during the worst of the heatwave, though.

I spent forever pacing around the Kalyani plant while the fruits were at the mature green stage. Then I waited just as long, completely impatient, for them to fully ripen. Even after they colored up completely, they stayed way too firm for a really long time. Because of that, I didn’t pick the first ones until July 4th.

So, in my setup, Kalyani didn’t exactly turn out to be an early variety. It was actually the very last one to start ripening out of everything I started in late February. But man, the wait was totally worth it. I was just blown away by how beautiful and amazingly delicious these tomatoes were.

Kalyani. The fruits are heavy, dense, and super meaty. Crimson colored. The flesh is thick and solid, and the flavor is intensely sweet. Definitely one of my favorites this season.

What a delicious tomato! Easily the best tasting one I grew this year. @Lyudmila PLS shared a seedling with me. Lyuda, thank you so much! This variety is getting a permanent spot on my grow list. Absolutely no tough yellow shoulders or white core/veins in my garden. The color is way brighter in person than in the photo.

👨‍🌾 Editor’s Note: The Holy Grail of Shelf Life
One detail in Tatka’s review is absolutely huge for heirloom growers. Usually, a sweet, buttery beefsteak turns to complete mush within 48 hours of picking. Kalyani is a rare exception. It stays rock-hard on the vine even when it’s fully colored up (which tests a grower’s patience!) but rewards you with zero splitting and an incredible shelf life indoors. If you want true heirloom flavor but hate watching your harvest rot on the kitchen counter, this is one to look out for.
