Rome (Rim) Heirloom Tomato: Huge Red Beefsteaks Review

A late variety, planted late, mid-April into open ground. The fruits are large, the declared weight of the fruits was 1.5 kg+ (3.3 lbs), they didn’t grow that big for me, they were 300-500g (10.5-17.5 oz). Productive, good tomato flavor. I will definitely plant it next season.

I also liked this late variety. The fruits are huge, up to 700 grams (1.5 lbs), beautifully gathered and ribbed at the stem. The yield wasn’t great for me – 6 pieces, but they were large, beautiful, and tasty 👍 My bush grew in the greenhouse, very vigorous, about 1.7-1.8 meters (5.5-6 ft) tall.

The yield was super, I had 3 tomatoes in a truss, roughly the same size, the weight of a single truss was 3.3 – 3.5 kg (7.2 – 7.7 lbs)! It set 4 trusses and tore down the support structure. I tried to lift it up and snapped the main stem. A mandatory candidate for planting in 2015.

Rome.

Rome is a strange variety. 2 bushes in the greenhouse. They grew to the roof. One doesn’t have a single fruit. The second one set 2. They will be about a kilo (2.2 lbs) each. But outdoors in open ground, it sets fruit perfectly.

My bushes redeemed themselves. They set an ocean of fruit right under the roof. This year it’s the leader in taste. The variety is definitely excellent.

The variety has hollow voids inside, which is why the fruits are big but lightweight. The taste itself is uninteresting, with clear acidity.

There is very little acidity. The tomatoes are actually heavy. The taste is balanced. I grow seedlings for my mom, and she requested that I only plant this one out of all the large-fruited varieties for next year.

I have no voids inside, it’s tasty, productive, and large! 👍

My Rome-2 was a little hollow inside. But I liked it. It’s staying on my grow list. Weighed it carefully…

When I offered a fruit of Rome to the village locals for seeds, they refused, saying they don’t grow mutants 🤣. But generally, these are the most large-fruited out of more than 50 planted varieties. The largest was 970 grams (2.1 lbs), it’s a pity I had to pick it green (I snapped the branch), it might have grown even more. There was no sun this year, so it’s hard to judge the taste, but in principle, it’s normal.

My Rome also turned out productive. All fruits are large, beautiful… The largest in size among all varieties was 912g (2 lbs), but other varieties, although visually smaller, were actually heavier…

From 2 bushes, including 5 pieces that are still hanging, I got 29 fruits.. 🙌
Thank God the bushes didn’t break, although they sagged..

Everyone liked the variety—tasty! Despite some voids, it turned out very juicy and meaty. Mine will probably finish ripening on the vine… It’s over 30°C (86°F) here during the day..

Guys, how tall does it get in open ground? Did you prune it to two stems?

I planted it in open ground.. it grew 1.20m (4 ft) tall… but it is literally empty inside 😆
Nearby there were varieties of the exact same size that weighed twice as much. You cut it open and inside there are solid voids. In my opinion, this is not good.

There are voids, but they are very small near the seeds. They do not affect the taste at all. One of the tastiest varieties. Tastier than Yablochnyi Lipetskiy. The only thing is you can’t let it overripen – the taste changes for the worse. The variety has taken permanent residency in my garden. I found seeds only in the fifth fruit. The first 4 were completely seedless.

My Rome. A vigorous bush, yield is below average, 3 fruits per bush. Large, very beautiful. I am planting it for the second year. Last year it was 1 bush – 2 tomatoes. This year 2 bushes – 7 tomatoes. Don’t know the taste yet – they haven’t ripened. Today is 06.09.15, sowed it like all indeterminates on March 8 – it’s a late tomato.

My yield also turned out below average. Maybe the summer is to blame, not enough heat, only four fruits grew on two stems, but they are all identical like in the photos. Taste-wise – an ordinary, tomato flavor. There are voids, but insignificant ones.

Here is what my Rome looked like, slightly hollow, so they were light. Both fruits are the first ones from megablooms (fused flowers) from two bushes and didn’t even reach a kilogram 🙂 visually it seemed they weighed more. Taste is good. But you shouldn’t let them overripen, they lose their flavor.

In open ground it was just over 1.5 meters (5 ft), but not much, maybe 1.6m.

It grew over 2 meters (6.5 ft) in the greenhouse, pruned to two stems, sowed on February 16, late-season, we picked the first one on July 30. All fruits are large up to the top tier. The variety is a bit hollow inside, and by autumn the voids became larger, the taste for me is mediocre.

I really liked the variety, there was a solid wall of giant beauties. Favorite of 2015.

And this is one of the last ones picked in October.

The yield is good, the taste is ordinary, the look is spectacular, but it dries out first (the skin wrinkles quickly in storage), so it’s better to consume it immediately.

Rome – the fruit quality is simply ideal. Its beauty matches its quality. And its yield surpasses both 😄.

BUT, if I’m being honest, and one must always be honest, the taste is a bit sour, there is a slight strange aftertaste (I haven’t encountered such an aftertaste anywhere else), organoleptic properties – watery mushy flesh.
