Why I Don’t Like Bi-Color Tomatoes — PomiTa (forum diary)

📖 Diary Highlights: In this diary entry, growers discuss the frustrating tendency of some bi-color tomatoes (like Rhodes Heirloom and Hawaiian Pineapple) to push massive vegetative growth with zero fruit set. PomiTa shares her quest to find the perfect bi-color/yellow tomato, praising Burracker’s Favorite and Golden Königsberg for taste, while showing off a highly successful greenhouse crop of classic reds and pinks, including the German heart-shaped Vater Rhein.

Thanks, that’s very kind 🙏. I didn’t even notice the nets 🤦‍♀️, even after zooming in on your photo. Those hanging watermelons are gorgeous. 👍 Are they grafted? I think you mentioned that earlier. You really can’t get by in gardening without talking to others 🙇‍♀️, so many questions come up 👋. I actually had one yesterday. Has anyone grown the Rhodes Heirloom tomato? It gets rave reviews in the variety threads. But for me this year, it didn’t produce a single tomato. Just kept flowering. 😡 I’m wondering if I did something wrong. I want to try it again next year. Same thing happened with Rugantino—first year was a dud, but this year it was a beauty with gorgeous tomatoes. It had a good spot this year and I took good care of it. 😎

Galina, Rhoades Heirloom is a bi-color, right? I’ve always had a weird relationship with them. I started with Nature’s Riddle (Zagadka Prirody) about 10 (or a bit more) years ago. I was absolutely blown away by its beauty and yield. But not the taste! It was just a bit too bland for me… but I’m super picky. Since then, I’ve tried a ton of bi-colors. The only one I can truly praise is Burracker’s Favorite. Absolutely delicious. But the skin is prone to cracking 😞

This past season, I actually decided to make it the “Year of Bi-colors and Yellows!” My goal was to finally pick 2-3 permanent varieties from this category, because year after year my husband tells me: ONLY CLASSIC REDS AND PINKS.

Well… it wasn’t a year, it was a total disappointment! Out of all the yellow-oranges, absolutely none of them beat Golden Königsberg in taste. Though I did really like Night Candle (a twin of Fox’s Nose, in my opinion). Out of the bi-colors in this difficult year, the ones I can praise are Marina’s Praise (???), ZG Medeo, and the beautiful Seraphima from Valdis.

Getting back to your question, I can say I had a similar issue with my bi-color Hawaiian Pineapple. It grew in height like a weed, with no flowers or fruit set, until I finally yanked it out in August with just one green tomato hanging under the roof. I still have no idea what that was all about 🤷‍♀️

Meanwhile, all my other numerous varieties behaved perfectly 😊

For example, like this… I have a ton of photos. I’m still learning the ropes here, so I’m just picking the first ones I see.

Those are just incredibly nice tomatoes in that greenhouse. 👍 What varieties are in the photo?

Thanks for the flattering review 😊 In the foreground, there are 2 plants of Vater Rhein. For the rest, I’d have to check my notebook entries… Most likely, Red Wolf and Maiden’s Tears 🤔
