Yellow Mimi F1 Tomato Review

Share your rating

📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Yellow Mimi F1

  • 🌍 Origin: A commercial Japanese F1 hybrid cherry tomato, frequently repackaged and sold by various Eastern European seed distributors.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall). Produces heavily branched, “coral-like” flower trusses (multiflora type). Easily reaches 6.5 ft (2 m) in a greenhouse.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Small, yellow, teardrop-shaped cherry tomatoes (rather than true pear shapes).
  • 👅 Flavor: Sweet and pleasant. Excellent for fresh snacking and holds up very well in canning/pickling recipes.
  • 📉 Yield: Good, though some experienced growers note it doesn’t quite match the massive yields of classic heirlooms like Honey Drop.

My seeds were from ASK. The packet actually didn’t mention it was an F1 hybrid; I only found that out during an email exchange with the producer because I had some doubts about the variety.

The bush is tall, and it produces rather unusual flower trusses that look like corals. It grows in my greenhouse, and it turned out to be completely indeterminate, definitely reaching around 6.5 ft (2 m) tall. The fruits aren’t really pear-shaped, they look more like little teardrops.

Pretty tasty little tomatoes, sweet, and they did extremely well when canned whole – absolutely delicious.

We tried a different batch of canned tomatoes today – they didn’t taste good at all. Mainly because the Paruch* tomatoes in the same jar turned out really sour.

It’s a Japanese variety. In terms of shape and taste, the fruits are very similar to Honey Drop* or Orange Pear. The flavor is good, but the yield doesn’t even come close to Honey Drop. I didn’t find anything particularly special about it, it’s similar to many other varieties with this type of fruit. The photo was taken under artificial grow lights.

👨‍🌾 Editor’s Notes:

  • “Coral-like” Trusses (Multiflora): Marina describes the flower trusses looking like corals. In the tomato world, this is a perfect description of the multiflora gene! Multiflora tomatoes produce massive, hyper-branching clusters of flowers that look like bouquets or coral reefs, rather than a single straight vine of blooms.
  • *Mixed Canning Jars & Paruch: In Russia, it is very common to pickle or can different varieties of tomatoes together in the same large jar. Marina notes her second batch tasted bad because she mixed Yellow Mimi with “Paruch” (a different commercial F1 hybrid known for being firm but sometimes highly acidic). The sourness of the Paruch ruined the brine for the whole jar.
