Growers’ Notes and Photos (USDA Zones 3-4 Experience)
Mamont (Mammoth). Biotekhnika brand, breeder L.A. Myazina. Indeterminate, vines aren’t overly powerful, sparse foliage (one vine out of four set the first truss and completely blinded out). Mid-early, yield is around average. Fruits are a raspberry color. Taste is okay, but nothing refined.
This fruit in the photo isn’t much smaller than the biggest ones I got, meaning the fruits aren’t particularly large, contrary to the commercial claims. Maybe my conditions just didn’t suit it.
Galina, exact same thing with the weight over here, they barely hit 8.8 oz (250 g), but the color was closer to pink. My seeds were from Aelita-Agro.
Sergey, back in 2011 I grew a total mix of off-type varieties from Aelita-Agro…
At least this one was direct from the breeder, but the claims on the seed packet turned out to be wildly exaggerated. Maybe my growing conditions just weren’t right for this strain.
The color of the fully ripe ones is nice though–turned out a great raspberry.
Mamont from Myazina.
It didn’t impress me with anything, at all… 🤷
It never reached the advertised sizes (max was about 5.3 oz (150 g) versus the promised 14.1-17.6 oz (400-500 g)). Yield didn’t blow me away either, and neither did the flavor… 😭
Greenhouse. Pruned to 2 stems. Seeds from Biotekhnika. Powerful, dense vine. Leaves are quite large. Thick stems, bit of a nitrogen hog. Responds well to fertilizers. Width of a 1-stem plant is ~15-20 inches (40-50 cm). Foliage density at the bottom is ~70%, at the top 30-40%.
It didn’t do well height-wise for me. Loaded up with fruit and stopped growing around 5 ft (1.5 m). But it’s growing thin tops–lacking nutrition. And it’s too late to feed now since the fruits are ripening. Didn’t quite work out for me on the first try.
Fruits aren’t large. Flavor ranged from sweetish in hot sunny weather to neutral and sour in cloudy weather. Not the best pink tomato option: giving it a 4.5 out of 5. Got about 7.7 lbs (3.5 kg) off the vine.
Planted Mamont for the first time, pretty good for a first run–tasty, sugary flesh, and quite productive. Tomatoes are average weight, about 7 oz (200 g) each, and they don’t crack. Mid-season as promised, but we pulled a few green ones in the fall and they ripened up indoors perfectly without losing any flavor (photo is from December 1st).
Full Summary: Plant, Yield, Taste, and Comparisons
- 🌿 Plant: A mid-early indeterminate vine. Growth habits vary—some report sparse foliage that occasionally blinds out (stops growing from the main leader), while others report vigorous, dense vines that act like nitrogen hogs. Tends to stay on the shorter side, sometimes stopping around 5 ft (1.5 m) in the greenhouse.
- 📈 Yield: Generally average. Not a prolific producer, and significantly hindered if the plant blinds out early. Will yield around 7-8 lbs per vine under decent greenhouse conditions.
- 👅 Taste: Flavor is highly weather-dependent. In full sun, it can develop a pleasant, sugary, classic pink tomato flavor. In overcast conditions, it turns noticeably sour and ordinary. Very crack-resistant, and late-harvested green tomatoes ripen nicely indoors.
- ⚠️ Discrepancies: The defining discussion around Mamont is its failure to meet seed packet claims. Packets from Myazina and Biotekhnika promise fruits up to 17.6 oz (500 g), but almost all growers max out at 5.3-8.8 oz (150-250 g).
- 🌎 Who Reviewed It: Grown in shorter, temperate seasons across Russia (Kemerovo, Ufa, Rybinsk) in USDA Zones 3-4.
